The Dead Sea Squirrels is a versatile band that plays the traditional music of the American South, both instrumental and vocal, a rich stew of archaic British transplanted ballads; haunting modal tunes and songs, African-rooted rhythms and blues; Cajun waltzes two-steps; Celtic-influenced guitar nuances; and old-time fiddle and banjo tunes – driving and stately, bouncy, quirky and often eerily beautiful.
In the spirit of creatively developing this living tradition, we play a combination of standard and original arrangements presented in an engaging and upbeat performance style
We also play widely for contra and square dances, and are known for our danceable tunes arranged in medleys designed to closely match and enhance the movements of the particular contra dance being taught/called. We tend to push the boundaries of the southern style with fiddle and fiddle/guitar harmonies. Since we are also dancers, we understand the importance of the interaction between dancers and musicians, and how to use rhythm and dynamics to augment the feel and excitement of a dance.
Members of the band consist of Cathy Mason on fiddle, Craig Edwards on fiddle, banjo, button accordion, guitar, mandolin and vocals, and Henry Yoshimura on guitar. We have played and toured widely on the East Coast, and have rocked the house at dances, music weekends, parties and concerts.
